TL;DR
- Choose Dun & Bradstreet when corporate identity, hierarchies and established business identifiers are central to the use case.
- Choose Crunchbase when funding, private-market activity and company developments shape account research.
- Choose People Data Labs when a documented company schema and API-based matching fit a data workflow.
- Company data and contact data are separate purchases. A good account record does not guarantee a reachable decision-maker.

Do not select from database-size claims alone. Test records that represent subsidiaries, renamed companies, international domains and the less visible accounts in your market.
The company record you actually need
Define the account object before comparing vendors. At minimum, decide which identifier anchors a company, how domains and alternative names are stored, and whether subsidiaries should roll into a parent account.
Firmographic fields such as industry, employee count and location are useful for segmentation, but their definitions can differ. Employee count may represent a company page, legal entity or wider group. Revenue may be reported, modelled or absent. Preserve source and observation date where a field can materially change targeting.
Funding belongs in its own structure: round type, announcement date, amount, investors and source. A total-funding number cannot replace the event history when the sales play depends on recency.
Dun & Bradstreet: best for identity and corporate structure
Dun & Bradstreet is an established option for business identity, firmographics and relationships between companies. D‑U‑N‑S numbers provide a durable identifier that can help organisations reconcile records across systems and suppliers.
It is a strong fit when procurement, risk or enterprise sales needs a consistent view of legal entities and corporate families. Ask the vendor to show the parent, headquarters and branch relationships for accounts your team already knows.
Pricing: products and data access are configured by use case and generally require a quote. Price the countries, fields, users, API or file delivery and redistribution rights actually needed.
Tradeoff: a strong corporate record may still be less useful for very new or small companies than a source focused on startup activity. Test the edge of your market, not only famous enterprises.
Crunchbase: best for funding and private-market context
Crunchbase provides company, funding and private-market data through its products and API packages. Its current data documentation describes firmographic and financial records alongside enrichment, insights and predictions.
For outbound research, the durable value is the underlying event and company data. Treat generated insights or predictions as additional inputs, not confirmed intent. A funding announcement can justify investigation, but does not prove that budget is assigned to your category.
Pricing: API and data licensing are sold through the applicable package and sales route. Clarify whether the data is for internal enrichment, a customer-facing product or another licensed use.
Tradeoff: funding-led coverage can be excellent for venture-backed markets while being less central to mature private companies, subsidiaries and public-sector accounts. Match the source to the market.
People Data Labs: best for documented API workflows
People Data Labs exposes company search and enrichment with a detailed schema. Documented company fields include identifiers, alternative domains and names, employee information, website, industry, location, funding and social profiles.
That transparency helps an engineering or revenue-operations team design mappings before integration. Use several identifiers where available and record the match confidence or evidence. A domain alone can be ambiguous for parent companies, brands and regional sites.
Pricing: compare the required company API operations, plan access and expected calls. Search, enrichment and licensed dataset delivery are different workflows and should be priced accordingly.
Tradeoff: a rich schema creates mapping decisions. Decide which source is authoritative for each CRM field and whether a lower-confidence match can update an existing record automatically.
Coresignal: an alternative for dataset and API use cases
Coresignal offers company and other professional datasets through APIs and larger data-delivery arrangements. It is worth considering when a team is building a data product or internal research layer and wants to inspect a wide structured record.
The evaluation should focus on the company identifier, domains, employee and industry fields, geography, update process and the rights attached to the chosen delivery method.
As with any aggregated source, compare actual records against known truth in your target market. Do not turn one provider's internal coverage claim into an independent accuracy conclusion.
Matching companies without corrupting the CRM
Run enrichment against a staging table first. Preserve the input, candidate match, returned identifier and fields that support the match. Review ambiguous results before changing the CRM.
Domains work well for many companies but fail for holding companies, shared corporate domains and rebrands. Names fail when legal and trading names differ. LinkedIn URLs, business identifiers and geography can supply additional evidence.
Set field-level rules. A verified website may safely fill an empty field, while a conflicting parent relationship should create a review task. Never let a bulk enrichment overwrite manually confirmed strategic-account data simply because it is newer.
For hierarchies, decide whether territories and reporting use the legal entity, selling account or ultimate parent. The data provider cannot make that commercial-policy choice for you.
Refresh policy and total cost
Ask how updates are delivered and identified. A full monthly refresh, change feed and on-demand enrichment create different operating models. The CRM should store the last checked date so a field does not look permanently current.
Total cost includes access, API calls or files, data matching, storage, implementation and review of conflicts. If the use case also needs people and verified emails, add that source separately rather than assuming company-data pricing includes contacts.
Choose the provider that produces usable account identities and decision-relevant fields for your segment. Funding depth, hierarchy depth and API convenience are different strengths, so a scoped combination can be more rational than a universal winner.
FAQ: B2B company data providers
Is company data the same as contact data?
No. Company data describes organisations and events; contact data identifies people and ways to reach them. Some vendors sell both, but evaluate the two jobs separately.
What is the best company identifier?
Use a durable provider or business identifier where appropriate, plus domains and other evidence. No single identifier handles every brand, subsidiary and reorganisation.
Can funding data prove buying intent?
No. It can make an account timely to research. The connection between the event and your offer still needs to be established.
Should enrichment overwrite CRM fields?
Only under explicit field-level rules. Conflicting or low-confidence values should be reviewed.
How often should company data refresh?
Match refresh frequency to how quickly a field changes and how the business uses it. Store the observation date and use change delivery where it adds value.
The source is one part of the data workflow. Our guide to b2b data enrichment tools covers the adjacent options.
