News APIs for Evidence-Bearing Company Events

News APIs for Evidence-Bearing Company Events

TL;DR

  • Buy news discovery that supports entity matching, originating evidence and event deduplication. Ten articles repeating one release are one event, not ten independent signals.
  • NewsAPI is a straightforward article-discovery candidate with production-plan restrictions. Event Registry adds event-oriented retrieval. GDELT offers open news datasets/API access that need more interpretation. NewsData.io is another managed recent/archive candidate.
  • Store publication time, event time and first observation separately. An old acquisition mentioned in today's article should not become a new acquisition trigger.
  • Price polling, pagination, archive depth, permitted content use and review. A headline-only response may need another licensed retrieval step before it can support a consequential claim.

Define the event, not just the article

An article can report several companies, several dates and a mixture of facts and predictions. A GTM trigger should identify the target entity, the event it experienced, the relevant time and the evidence supporting that interpretation.

News discovery is therefore only the first stage. Keep the original article URL, publisher, publication date and a permitted supporting excerpt. Resolve the company separately, then decide whether the event is relevant to your offer. A sentiment label or broad keyword match does not establish a buying need.

Our funding, hiring and expansion guide covers the broader signal-buying decision. Here the focus is building evidence from news coverage. The company data guide covers the identity layer needed to avoid attaching a story to the wrong account.

Four news access routes

Route Useful output Buyer fit Limitation to price/test
NewsAPI Article discovery and metadata Straightforward topic/company monitoring Production entitlement and article-content availability
Event Registry Articles and event-oriented fields Teams needing event grouping/context Concept/entity precision and API usage units
GDELT Open news data and search interfaces Technical research pipelines Interpretation, coverage and operating effort
NewsData.io Recent/archive news API Managed retrieval with specified history Endpoint allowance, archive rights and content scope

NewsAPI

NewsAPI's pricing page states that the Developer plan is for development/testing and cannot be used in staging or production, including internal production. That is important for an internal sales monitor: “not customer-facing” does not make it a development environment.

The current Business plan is $449 per month, billed monthly, with 250,000 requests and $0.0018 per additional request. It includes real-time discovery and up to five years of search history. The provider explicitly says its search responses do not supply full articles; price any permitted follow-up retrieval separately.

The non-fit is building a production operating budget around the free developer allowance. Choose Business when the publishers, languages and query pattern fit, then confirm content rights for the intended use. Retain originating links and a separately authorised content-retrieval path where necessary.

Event Registry

Event Registry's API plan description describes event fields such as title, summary, date, location, concepts and related articles. That is relevant when an operator wants a cluster of coverage rather than a flat stream of near-duplicate articles.

Evaluate the event grouping on your own company sample. An event cluster can combine genuinely related coverage, but the account match and event interpretation still need checking. A summary is a derived output; retain the articles that support it.

Choose it for a recurring event-oriented research requirement. Avoid treating an event count as a count of independent confirmations or verified buying signals. The accessed plan page is not sufficient evidence for a current dollar quote, so obtain the actual API/token allowance, archive and redistribution terms before procurement.

GDELT

GDELT's data overview describes multiple datasets and query approaches. Its DOC API introduction documents news-search parameters and modes. These offer a useful open research route when the team can build its own selection and validation layer.

Use the specific dataset's dates, languages and response semantics. Do not assume every GDELT product contains the same history or article body. Broad coverage can generate many irrelevant mentions, especially for ambiguous company names.

Choose it for technical exploration or a pipeline prepared to maintain queries, deduplication and evidence checks. The non-fit is expecting a turnkey account-event feed with commercially verified identity. Open access reduces the access bill; compute, retrieval and analyst effort remain costs.

NewsData.io

NewsData.io's documentation describes recent and archive endpoints and current plan options. This is another managed route where the required language and historical window can be tested explicitly.

Keep recent monitoring and historical backfill as separate workload calculations. Verify pagination, credits/calls, delays, returned content and the archive range in the chosen offer. An archive endpoint's existence does not establish that your subscription includes unlimited history.

Choose it when the accepted sample and commercial scope fit. Avoid selecting on a low entry price without modelling how many requests the query and pagination pattern require. Price the intended production use and content rights rather than an adjacent trial.

Build a company-event record

Field Meaning
Target identity Account ID, domain, legal/trading entity and match reason
Event type Funding, expansion, appointment, acquisition or another defined class
Event time When the reported event happened or is planned to happen
Publication time When the source published the coverage
First observation When your monitor first retrieved it
Evidence Originating source, supporting passage and related coverage
Disposition Accepted, qualified, duplicate, stale or wrong entity

Deduplicate by the underlying event, not only URL. A press release can be republished across several sites with slightly different titles. Preserve the originating release and label the copies as corroborating circulation, not independent investigation.

For ambiguous names, use domain, location, executive and business context to resolve the entity. “Mercury” should not automatically match every story containing that word. Missing context belongs in a review queue rather than a confident CRM overwrite.

Work an expansion announcement

Suppose a hypothetical story published today reports that Northstar plans a new French facility next year. The article also mentions a German office opened two years ago. Create separate event records: the planned French facility and historical German office. Only the former is new coverage, and even it is a plan rather than a completed opening.

A republishing site may assign today's date to the old announcement. Check the originating document before using first observation as event time. If later coverage says the plan was cancelled, retain the contradiction and stop the expansion trigger.

The commercial implication is a judgement: expansion may warrant researching regional operations needs. It does not prove procurement budget for your product. Use the ABM Account Scoring Template to define what additional evidence qualifies the account.

Cost a monitored account list

Assume 1,000 accounts checked daily for a 30-day month: 30,000 account-check observations. If the API requires one query per account plus 10% additional pagination/retry calls, plan for 33,000 requests. Batching or a shared feed can change that count; keep observations and billable requests separate.

Using NewsAPI Business's observed $449 monthly subscription as the access basis, add an assumed $50 for permitted retrieval/storage. If 200 candidate events need two minutes of review at $60 per hour, review costs $400 and the total is $899. At an assumed 100 distinct accepted events, cost is $8.99 per accepted event. The 33,000-request design is within the stated 250,000 allowance; the extra costs and yields are planning assumptions, not measured results.

A cheaper API that creates twice as many ambiguous matches can cost more in review. Conversely, an event-grouping service earns its premium only if its output actually reduces relevant duplicate and identity work. Use the competitor monitoring guide for the broader change programme after the evidence feed is accepted.

FAQ

Is publication date the event date?

Not always. A current article can discuss an old or future event, and republished coverage can receive a new date. Store event, publication and first-observation time separately and qualify missing event dates.

Does a news API provide permission to reuse full articles?

Check the provider and source terms for your intended storage, display and redistribution. Discovery access and content rights are different questions. Retain only permitted evidence and links where full text is not authorised.

Can a funding headline trigger outreach automatically?

It can enter a research policy, but funding alone does not establish fit or need. Resolve the company, verify the event and apply the account qualification and action rules before creating a sales task.

How should we handle syndicated duplicates?

Group them under the originating event and preserve the source trail. Do not count repeated copies as independent confirmations. Keep materially different reporting or contradictions visible rather than deleting every similar headline indiscriminately.
