TL;DR
- A B2B CDP needs to preserve people, accounts and their relationships. A unified person profile alone cannot represent a buying group.
- Evaluate Adobe Real-Time CDP B2B Edition for an enterprise B2B object model, RudderStack for a warehouse-led operating model, Twilio Segment for event collection and downstream connections, and Tealium for real-time profile and audience operations.
- Buy the architecture your team can govern. One million events, 5,000 accounts and four destinations is not a complete price specification.
- Test removals, consent and changing account membership before celebrating audience creation.
A buying group is a relationship model
A procurement lead, technical evaluator and executive sponsor can work for the same company while playing different roles in separate opportunities. Treating them as one “engaged account” loses information. Treating each as an unrelated lead creates a different error.
The CDP should preserve a person identity, account identity, membership relationship and any justified buying-role evidence. Roles can change; an inferred evaluator should not become a permanent fact. Keep the source and date of that inference.
A business may also contain multiple subsidiaries and workspaces. Decide which entity receives an audience membership and which person may be activated in each destination. An account becoming eligible does not mean every employee is eligible for contact.
This guide concerns the platform that unifies and activates that model. The product-led sales guide covers the seller workflow consuming it. The two purchases should share definitions without duplicate ownership.
Four CDP architectures compared
| Option | Strong reason to evaluate | Operating owner | B2B question to resolve | Budget basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Real-Time CDP B2B Edition | Enterprise B2B data model and activation | Marketing operations plus platform/data teams | Required account, relationship and audience scope | Edition, profiles, activation and services quote |
| RudderStack | Warehouse-centred identity and activation | Data engineering | How account traits and relationships are modelled | Modules, usage, warehouse and support |
| Twilio Segment | Common event collection and connections | Product/data teams | Which account capabilities exist in the proposed package | Connections plus identity/activation entitlements |
| Tealium AudienceStream | Real-time profile enrichment and audiences | Digital/data operations | How person audiences reflect account relationships | Contracted products, usage and connectors |
These are architecture recommendations from documentation checked on 6 October 2026. They are not the results of a four-platform identity benchmark. No scope-comparable paid quote was established, so an entry-price league table would imply precision that the requirements do not support.
Adobe for an enterprise B2B model
Adobe's B2B Edition overview describes a purpose-built B2B edition and extensions to Experience Platform capabilities. Its appeal is an explicit enterprise model rather than an improvised account field added to a person-only design.
Evaluate it where CRM, marketing and enterprise data teams need common account/person context and already have the capacity to govern an Adobe deployment. Mapping relationships and activation policies remains an implementation task. A product category labelled B2B does not settle your subsidiary or opportunity definitions.
It is a poor fit for a small team seeking four straightforward exports with minimal platform work. Scope the exact edition, profiles, sources, destinations, environments and professional services. Existing Adobe agreements can change incremental economics, but do not establish a universally cheap deployment. Require a demonstration using your ambiguous memberships and removal cases, not only a clean sample audience.
RudderStack for warehouse-led control
RudderStack's documentation describes collection, unification and activation, including event streams and reverse ETL. Its warehouse-led proposition suits teams that want identities, traits and account models maintained close to their analytical data.
The advantage is operational consistency when the warehouse already owns the business definitions. An eligible-account model can be reviewed with the transformations that produce it, then projected into revenue destinations. The data team still needs to maintain the account relationships; buying connectors does not supply a correct graph.
Choose this route when engineering ownership and a reliable warehouse already exist. It is weaker if marketers need a managed audience interface but have no technical capacity to support the models. Budget platform modules, event handling, activation, warehouse computation and maintenance. Open or composable components do not remove the cost of operating them. Keep personal and account projections separate where destinations have different identity rules.
Segment for collection and connections
Segment Connections describes collecting event data through a common API and connecting information from warehouse, CRM and other systems. That is useful when fragmented tracking and repeated integrations are the first problem to solve.
A consistent event layer can give analytics and activation the same input. It does not automatically make a buying-group graph. Confirm how the proposed Segment package represents accounts, membership and audience activation, especially if procurement is adding identity or engagement capabilities beyond Connections.
Segment is a sensible shortlist candidate for an engineering-led team standardising collection across applications. Avoid selecting it from connector count alone. A destination might support an integration while lacking the object, deletion or field behaviour your workflow needs. Obtain separate entitlements and allowances for the requested collection, unification and activation scope. Historical or partial documentation should not be converted into an unsupported claim that an account feature is absent.
Tealium for real-time audience operations
Tealium AudienceStream documentation describes unified profiles, audiences and real-time personalisation. This is relevant where digital operations needs to react to first-party behaviour across an established collection and activation estate.
Its strongest fit is a funded real-time audience programme with owners for identity, attributes and downstream policy. B2B use requires a deliberate account relationship model. A stitched visitor profile can be correct while the inferred employer or buying role is wrong.
Choose it where existing Tealium infrastructure and real-time profile operations justify the wider purchase. It is weaker where a daily warehouse audience would meet the business requirement more simply. Scope AudienceStream, collection products, enrichment, connectors and support in the contract. No like-for-like current price was verified. Demonstrate membership changes, profile removal and destination deletion rather than assume that real-time delivery guarantees real-time policy enforcement.
Test an audience across four destinations
For the proposed one million events and 5,000 accounts, define one concrete audience: active customers with meaningful adoption across two teams, an approaching capacity limit and no unresolved critical support incident. Define the eligible people separately from the account.
Send a test account to four destinations, such as CRM, customer success, lifecycle messaging and advertising. The CRM may receive an account trait, messaging may require eligible person IDs, and an advertising destination may accept only a matchable subset. Do not expect identical row counts to prove success.
Test an account merge, a user changing employer, an opt-out and a support incident becoming critical. Each should update or remove the appropriate projection. Record the effective date and destination acknowledgement. A successful API request is weaker evidence than the destination actually applying the intended state.
In a hypothetical sample, 500 accounts qualify but only 350 have eligible known contacts. The account audience contains 500; the contact audience should not be inflated to 500 by guessing addresses. If 320 contacts are accepted by a destination, the 30 failures need a disposition. This is a test design, not observed platform performance.
Use the RevOps CRM setup playbook to define durable identifiers and ownership before activation. The customer-expansion signals guide covers interpreting the account behaviour.
What belongs in the budget
One million events across 5,000 accounts averages 200 events per account. That ratio does not tell you the number of person profiles, retained history, real-time calls or audience refreshes. Price those separately where the vendor does.
If four destinations each receive a daily 5,000-account projection, the gross scheduled workload is 20,000 destination rows per day, or 600,000 over 30 days. Delta sync may reduce it, but only if the selected connector and policy use changes rather than full refreshes. These are workload assumptions, not billable-unit claims for every provider.
Add implementation, model maintenance, identity adjudication and warehouse charges to the contract. An illustrative 20 hours of monthly ownership at £50 an hour adds £1,000. Prefer the simplest architecture that delivers governed account and person projections. Wider CDP scope earns its place when several teams need the same context, not merely because “customer 360” sounds comprehensive.
FAQ
Can one person belong to several buying groups?
Yes. Model the relationship explicitly with its account, role, source and period. Do not overwrite one membership to make the interface simpler if the underlying sale involves several entities or opportunities.
Do we need a CDP for four destinations?
Not necessarily. A reliable warehouse model and activation tool may be enough. A CDP is more compelling when collection, identity, real-time audiences and shared governance create a coordinated problem that point integrations cannot manage economically.
Does the CDP replace consent management?
It can carry and apply policy information, but the organisation still needs correct consent definitions and source ownership. Validate restrictions at activation and at the destination. The email suppression guide covers that narrower operational requirement.
What is the minimum acceptance test?
Demonstrate one complete audience journey, including a correct inclusion, an ambiguous identity, a membership change and a removal. Inspect both the source model and the actual destination state. A polished audience builder alone is insufficient.
